Put simply, the Privileges Committee is the only body with the authority to determine whether a Prime Minister has misled Parliament. Its role is to examine the evidence, assess the facts, and reach an independent conclusion—free from political pressure or speculation.
This is why the process matters. Allegations of misleading Parliament strike at the heart of democratic accountability, and they must be handled with transparency and seriousness. The public deserves clarity, not confusion or delay, when questions of integrity are raised.
The truth does matter. If concerns are not addressed openly and decisively, they risk eroding trust in political leadership. In that context, the Mandelson cover-up could come to be seen as a defining issue—one that shapes perceptions of Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership and commitment to accountability.
