Mike Wood MP has today written to the Chief Executive of Severn Trent Water, describing the recent sewage discharge into Wom Brook from the Giggetty Lane overflow as completely unacceptable.
In his letter, Mr Wood demanded a clear timetable for planned capacity upgrades on the sewerage network, including the installation of a new screen and increased storage capacity. He has called for immediate action to ensure the network is strengthened ahead of further development.
While acknowledging that rainfall levels were heavy, he noted that the conditions were not exceptional and stressed that local waterways should not be placed under avoidable environmental pressure.
With significant development underway in the area, concerns have been raised that additional strain will be placed on local drainage infrastructure unless urgent improvements are delivered.
Speaking on his social media pages, Mike Wood MP said:
"We need action now before new local developments put even more strain on the network.
I know local Councillors Dan Kinsey and Barry Bond have been pressing this issue closely with the Severn Trent project team. While we saw a reduction in spills last year, 14 discharges is still 14 too many. Local residents deserve better."
