Putting Heritage Pubs Back on the Agenda: Mike Wood MP Re-Presents Crooked House-Inspired Bill to Parliament

Mike Wood MP has today reintroduced his ‘Heritage Public Houses Bill’ to Parliament, aiming to better protect heritage pubs like the Crooked House.

After presenting the Private Member’s Bill for its Second Reading, the MP Kingswinford and South Staffordshire stated that the new law would impose a duty on local authorities to ensure that Heritage Pubs are protected by law, prompted by the infamous case of the Crooked House in Himley.

Mike Wood said:

"The destruction of the Crooked House in 2023 was a deeply regrettable act that erased an important piece of our local heritage overnight.

“The Save The Crooked House campaign has done outstanding work in advocating for the pub’s rebuilding, but this tragedy demonstrates the need for stronger legislation to safeguard heritage pubs and ensure such an irreparable loss is never repeated.”

The Private Member's Bill, entitled the ‘Heritage Public Houses Bill’, will now proceed to its Second Reading on 16th October 2026.

Mike Wood MP presented a previous version of the Bill during the last Parliamentary Session. However, the Bill ran out of time and was therefore not made law. Mr Wood has reintroduced his Bill to ensure that heritage pubs receive the legislative protection that they deserve and put hospitality back at the forefront of public debate.

Three years on from the demolition of The Crooked House, the loss of what was affectionately known as "Britain's Wonkiest Pub" remains something I continue to feel deeply. For so many people like me across the Black Country and beyond, The Crooked House was far more than just a pub.
