Rooted in Kingswinford: Ashwood Nurseries and the Challenges Ahead
I had the genuine pleasure of visiting Ashwood Nurseries in Kingswinford recently, where I was warmly welcomed by owner John Massey and manager Rachel.
For those who aren’t familiar, Ashwood Nurseries is far more than just a local garden centre—it’s an award-winning, family-run business that has become a cherished part of the Kingswinford community. With a proud history spanning over 40 years, Ashwood has not only cultivated some of the country’s finest plants but has also played a key role as a local employer and contributor to the regional economy.
During our conversation, John and Rachel shared some valuable insights into the realities of running a horticultural business in today’s climate. In particular, they spoke candidly about some of the new and increasingly complex challenges they’ve faced over the past year—many of which have arisen in response to recent changes introduced under the Labour Government, specifically relating to National Insurance.
It's clear that changes in policy, is having devastating consequences for small and medium-sized businesses like Ashwood Nurseries. I remain absolutely committed to standing up for and supporting our local businesses, ensuring that the voices of employers across Kingswinford and South Staffordshire are heard loud and clear.
